Kearny’s town council passed an ordinance restricting where medical marijuana dispensaries can operate, further limiting a future marijuana industry in the municipality.

Under the ordinance, medical dispensaries are now limited to a single industrial zone in South Kearny. Dispensaries are also not be allowed to open within a two-mile radius of each other.

“We don’t believe (marijuana) use is appropriate near residents, schools, playgrounds,” Mayor Al Santos said.

The new ordinance places Kearny among Hudson County’s least weed-friendly municipalities. Anticipating the impending legalization of recreational marijuana, Union City and Weehawken preemptively banned the production and sale of the drug.

On April 21, the Kearny council banned growing and processing marijuana within town limits, but allowed for legal medicinal usage. Santos said that move was made in response to an “inquiry” about opening a marijuana business.

Kearny’s rules are in contrast to other municipalities like Hoboken, Secaucus, and Jersey City, where planning boards have welcomed medical marijuana dispensaries. Jersey City made an early attempt to decriminalize the drug, and Mayor Steve Fulop has been outspoken about his support for legalization.
