PORTAGE, MI — Marijuana businesses in Portage can apply to sell recreational marijuana starting Wednesday, June 17.
The sale of recreational marijuana was approved in Portage after the city council passed an ordinance regulating its sale on Tuesday, May 26.

Starting Wednesday, the application window for medical or recreational marijuana licenses will open for provisioning centers, secure transporters, safety compliance facilities, grower facilities, processor facilities, microbusinesses and retailers.

The deadline for submitting applications is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10. No applications or parts of applications for these types of provisional permits will be received outside of this application period. The City of Portage reserves the right to alter the application deadline.
All applicants must have received pre-qualification from the Michigan Marihuana Regulatory Agency in order to have their application considered. There are no exceptions, according to the city.
All applicants must be familiar with the city’s ordinance, which is available online.
Applications must be submitted in person and must include a signed and complete application form, all attachments required and the $5,000 permit fee.
City Hall is only open by appointment only due to COVID-19 guidelines. To schedule an appointment to submit an application, applicants can call the city clerk. All applications will be reviewed once the application period is closed.
