Halloween is right around the corner! Instead of handing out candy or going to a party, get comfy on the couch. This year break out some snacks, a bowl, and find a thriller to watch. Ready for a movie to mess with your head? I’ve created a list of 5 thrillers to get you in the mood for Halloween that have their scary moments. Binge watch these and let us know what gets under your skin the most.

The Shining (1980)

Another classic psychological horror thriller to add to your watchlist! Based off of Stephen King’s novel, the film takes place in the eery Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies during off-season. As winter goes on, Jack Torrance, the seasonal caretaker starts to lose his mind by being able to see the deceased. Cabin fever becomes REAL as he drinks heavily and connects with supernatural forces. Soon, his wife and son fall victim to his outbursts.

Donnie Darko (2001)

With a solid cult following, Donnie Darko has an all star cast featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Drew Barrymore, and Patrick Swayze. The main character (Gyllenhaal) finds himself struggling with mental illness and questioning what is his true reality. Filled with secrets, sleepwalking, and a packed Halloween party, this movie is made for those who love to piece together a puzzle.

Disturbia (2007)

Starring Shia LeBeouf, David Morse, Sarah Roemer, and Carrie-Anne Moss, this seemingly innocent movie about a troubled teen goes south. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Kale Brecht (LeBeouf) finds himself under house arrest and starts spying on his neighbors to pass the time. As he befriends his new, cute neighbor, he starts to notice something extremely suspicious occurring in the house across from him.

Us (2019)

Written and directed by comedian Jordan Peele, Us, is anything but funny. It easily tops my list of 5 thrillers to get you in the mood for Halloween. This film was released at SXSW and received critical and commercial success once it was released in theaters. What starts off as a trip with another family becomes a nightmare when a group of dopplegangers appear. Us is filled with violence, confusion, and betrayal.

The Lighthouse (2019)

The Lighthouse is a twisted tale of Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson) who takes on a short term gig as a wickie, who reports to an older man named Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe). After completing taxing work for a few weeks, a storm begins and Winslow starts to lose his sanity. Both men start fighting over rations and alcohol. Their disagreements leave them both to compromised states of being. This film is NOT for those who can not handle disturbing images.

Thrillers Are Perfect for October

Even if Halloween isn’t in full force this year, you can still cuddle up and watch a spooky movie with your circle. Get ready to jump, close your eyes, and hold onto the edge of your seat with ANY of these films.
