Missing That ‘First High’ Feeling

Do you remember when you used to get high for the first couple of times, and it was something like no other? When I first started smoking cannabis, I absolutely could not function like a normal person. I’d constantly forget where I was and my surroundings would turn cartoon-ish.

Now, no matter how baked you get, it’s never like that juvenile high feeling. Even with a tolerance break, you can never get back that feeling like when you first started smoking cannabis. It’s bizarre to think that our cannabis is better now than it was 10 years ago.

Don’t get me wrong, getting high is still amazing. The warmth and happiness that waves over you like an ocean’s hug feel better than finding a $20 bill on the ground. I just wish I could crack an Arizona Tea one more time, and forget it’s in my hand after hitting the blunt like maybe twice.

Is My Tolerance Making Me Less High?

If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “Am I the problem here?” while trying to smoke cannabis, then you’ve officially encountered the dreaded tolerance break threshold.

No one ever likes going on a tolerance break. Whether it’s for work, school or other personal reasons, like not being able to get high, going on a tolerance break sucks.

If you’re like me, you’ll delay the beginning of your tolerance break until the last possible moment. Then, you’ll sadly discover that while you may be able to get a little higher, it did not restore your ability to get lost in the mirror for hours after one bong rip.

The sad fact is: you’re never going to be able to get that high again. Sure, you can still get so high that you forget you have work, or that you even have a job. You can still get so high that the rotating ceiling fan becomes interesting.

However, you’re never going to get that first high feeling back. You can’t get 2010 high in 2020, even with 2020’s cannabis product.

It’s More Than A Feeling

Maybe there’s more to it than a bullet-proof tolerance. Considering the last time I first got high was almost 10 years ago, no wonder I can’t get that feeling back.

We’ve advanced from sneaking out to get high in the woods with a coke can and mom’s tin foil. The thrill of slipping out to get high diminishes with every gained year of independence, and now it’s unnecessary. Sure, getting high is still exciting. I still ask for a baggie every Christmas. However, now I don’t have to scoff the shit down like it’s Thanksgiving.

Maybe that’s why we don’t get as high anymore. There certainly isn’t a decline in cannabis quality, as each year the cannabis industry grows and gets stronger. So, maybe it’s because our social surroundings have changed. Our adrenaline isn’t pumping from the thought of getting caught by parents or authority, or at least not as much as before.

Our young brains were just getting used to cannabis, and the thrill unlocked our inner adrenaline junkies. Nowadays, I still get an adrenaline rush, but it’s whenever the dealer knocks-off $10.

The Mangos Don’t Do Shit

You’ve probably heard all of the methods that will supposedly help you get higher. For example, holding your hit in until you pass out, or eating mangos to get higher. From personal experience, none of those methods work. Holding your hit in longer will only give you brain damage, and I’m pretty sure I’d need to eat a 100 mangos to get 2010 high.

However, even though these ‘get high quick’ methods don’t do shit, you can still find ways to get higher. Also, you don’t need to sacrifice smoking for months, weeks or even a day.

Change Your Smoking Contents And Apparatus

The best thing that you can do to get a little higher is to change your smoking apparatus or contents. If you’ve been using the same clogged bong for the past three months, or repeatedly consume the same cannabis strand, you’re not going to get mega high.

It’s always a good idea to change it up a bit and use a different bong for a change or use rolling papers instead. Finding different ways to smoke keeps things interesting, as your body can get used to a repetitive smoking routine. Or, try cleaning your damn bong for once. The smoke has to get to your lungs somehow, how are they going to do that through two inches of tar resin?

The Bottom Line

As we get older, our bodies tend to get used to outside elements, such as cannabis smoke consistently invading our brain cells. Of course we’re never going to get as high as we used to 10 years ago.

It still sucks, though, to only have memories of being mind-boggling high. We never knew just how good we had it. Nonetheless, at least we don’t have to smoke out of a rusty can in the woods anymore.
