If you’re like most people, you have heard of the benefits of CBD. Preliminary scientific research has shown that CBD may help with a variety of physical and mental health conditions. Perhaps you’re ready to hop on the CBD bandwagon…but have some questions first.
A common question that many people ask about CBD oil is what exactly it tastes like. After all, many of us are familiar with the pungent odor of marijuana, and CBD is made from the same family of plants. So before you buy CBD oil, you may want to make sure that it’ll taste good.

CBD is often described as having a grassy or earthy flavor. While many people enjoy the taste of CBD, others find it off-putting. Fortunately, there are ways that you can mask the flavor of CBD while still enjoying its benefits.
How is CBD Oil Made?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a natural compound found in the cannabis plant. In the United States, CBD is often made from hemp, which is a part of the cannabis family. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized the production of hemp in the U.S. Industrial hemp must contain no more than 0.3% THC, which is the psychoactive component found in marijuana.
Manufacturers use a variety of processes to extract CBD and all of the other Cannabinoids from the leaves, stalks, stems, and flowers of the hemp plant. The extraction process may involve the use of acetone, a carrier oil, alcohol, steam vapor, or carbon dioxide. Depending on the process used, there may be some impurities left over in the resulting CBD.
The CBD and other cannabinoids are then combined with a carrier oil or made into another product, such as CBD gummies or a topical lotion. In oil form, CBD may be taken in a number of ways:
- Sublingual oils are placed under the tongue and held there for about 90 seconds before swallowing.
- CBD capsules involve enclosing the CBD in a capsule, which is then swallowed whole.
- CBD oil in cartridges can be vaped through a vape pen.
Many people prefer to use sublingual oils, as it is often the fastest and most effective way to take advantage of the benefits of CBD. However, because you are holding this oil directly in your mouth, taste may become an issue for some users.
So, What Does CBD Oil Taste Like?
Because CBD oil is made from a plant, it is often described as having a grassy or earthy flavor. Many people enjoy the flavor of CBD oil, but it can be bitter, especially with high concentration CBD oil. If you are taking it in capsule form, that might not be an issue for you, but you will notice the flavor if you take your CBD oil in tincture form.
If you enjoy earthy flavors, then you may like the taste of CBD. For many people, it helps to mask the flavor a bit in order to make the CBD oil taste better. This can be done in a number of ways, from choosing the right carrier oil, combining it with food or drink, picking a flavored oil, or starting with lower concentrations of CBD. There are some differences in taste based on the processing of CBD. The more the product is processed the less plant like the CBD can taste.
Full Spectrum Raw CBD-CBDA : Is not heated and has considerably less processing, leaving it to taste more plant like, earthy or grassy. Often the liquid is darker in color or can be a bit cloudy due to plant matter.
Full Spectrum: This has been processed a bit more than a raw product but it still includes all the cannabinoids and terpenes leaving it with a strong plant taste.
Broad Spectrum: The plant matter has been processed and some of the cannabinoids and other plant matter have been extracted. Usually these products are 0 THC or they can have a higher concentration of a specific cannabinoid like CBN or CBG. These products tend to have a more clear appearance. They also do not have the heavy grass or natural flavoring of the full spectrums. Most gummies are made from Broad spectrum or isolates so as not to taste like grass and dirt.
Isolates: This is much like it is described. The CBD is isolated out of the plant and a product is made with CBD alone. This is the most processed product as it has removed all of the other naturally occurring plant matter. This makes for a product with no natural or plant like flavor. It actually will have little to no flavor at all without added flavoring.
How Can I Find a CBD Oil That I Like?
If you are interested in trying CBD, but don’t like the taste, there are steps that you can take to pick a product that tastes good to you. The first step involves examining the carrier oil used with the product.
Once extracted, CBD is combined with a food-grade carrier oil. It often takes on the flavor profile of this carrier oil, so choosing a carrier oil that you like can help improve the taste of your CBD oil.
There are four primary types of carrier oils used with CBD: olive oil, hemp seed oil, coconut oil, and MCT oil(fractionated coconut oil). Both coconut oil and MCT oil have little to no taste or smell. As a result, these oils won’t affect the natural flavor of CBD. If you dislike the taste of CBD, then you should avoid products made with coconut or MCT oil.
Hemp seed oil has a nutty flavor, which can mask the taste of the CBD. Olive oil tends to have an earthy flavor, so it can increase the natural taste of CBD.
The second step is to consider a flavored CBD oil. These flavors are made using additives, which tend to work best with carrier oils like coconut and MCT oil. Common flavoring include peppermint, chocolate mint, and citrus.
If you still don’t enjoy the taste of CBD oil, you can choose to combine it with food or drinks. For this third step, you may want to put a mint or gum in your mouth before putting the drops under your tongue. This taste will typically overwhelm the flavor of the CBD. Alternatively, you may choose to mix your CBD into something like yogurt or a smoothie. We typically do not recommend this as CBD is expensive and often you do not get all of the CBD. While this will slow down the effectiveness of your CBD, you won’t be able to taste the CBD.
If neither of these options appeal to you, you can just have a chaser ready for your CBD oil. Just have your favorite drink ready to go, and once you swallow your CBD oil, take a few big drinks.
Finally, if you are really struggling with the taste of CBD, your best option may be to use an alternative form, such as capsules or gummies. With these products, you won’t taste the CBD at all, so you can reap the full benefits of CBD without the unpleasant taste. It is Alternatively, you may choose to vape CBD oil. Vape cartridges are typically flavored, so you won’t taste the CBD — just your chosen flavor, such as blackberry, stone fruit, mint, or citrus.
