People of all ages are partaking in the green goddess. As expected, younger people are using weed more than the older demographics. According to a 2019 Statista survey, 22% of people between the ages of 18 and 20 said they use weed in one form or another. Their parents, ages 50 to 64 years old, were the next highest demographic. In this group, 12% of people said they use weed. Just behind them are 11% of middle-aged people between the ages of 30 and 49. Only 3% of people over the age of 65 said they used weed.

Where Do They Live?

Where you live in the country also accounts for the likelihood of you getting stoned. This is also reflected on the states that have legalized recreational and/or medicinal consumption. Of course, those states without legalization will have fewer people using weed. The statistics show that 13% to 16% of people living in the East, Midwest and West use weed. Only 7% of people in the south enjoy a good high.

In 2019, Californians spent the most on pot at $3.1 billion. Colorado came in second with $1.6 billion and Washington was third with $1.1 billion in pot sales.

Who Gets Stoned More, Men or Women?

According to 2019 statistics from Gallup, more men are getting high. On average, 15% of men use weed while only 9% of women do.

Politics Matters

It’s not surprising that the political leanings are quite different between those who smoke pot and those who don’t. The same Gallup statistics show that 24% of people who are politically liberal use weed. Moderates come in second with 12% of them using and just 4% of conservative-minded Americans are getting high.

Who is For Legalization?

Regardless of if people are buying weed themselves, support for federal legalization is high. The study by Statista shows that more than 50% of people across all age demographics support federal legalization. In people between the ages of 18 and 34 years old, that support skyrockets to 78%.

The statistics of who is using weed aren’t really very surprising. I think we all could have guessed pretty accurately.
