Space and Cannabis Culture

Traceable History

Recreational cannabis consumption can be traced back over 2500 years. Evidence from western China and Syria artwork indicates that our ancestors were perhaps consuming weed centuries before then.

Now, if you’ve done your homework, you already know that our ancestors were vibrating on a higher frequency – especially as it relates to being in tune with the universe. Relics, monuments, pyramids, and the Nazca Lines were designed to align with the solar system: ancient reminders of a greater cosmic awareness can be found on every continent around the globe.

We’ll save the ancient alien discussion for another time, but it’s safe to say our distant cousins were well versed in both space and cannabis. They were onto expanding your mind well before you started posting dab videos on IG.

But why is the concept of space synonymous with weed and cannabis culture?

The most basic term of “getting high” is not without a connection to space. After all, there aren’t many things higher than the infinite sky and solar system. The first use of the word “high” in relation to cannabis use was in 1930. The term “high” in connection to drug use appears to be connected to the act of elevating one’s physiological state through consumption.

Cannasseurs are also very familiar with the term “getting lifted”. Cannabis use has become more popular with the millennial generation than depressants like alcohol. The idea of “getting lifted” is a positive connection to the weed experience, rather than a narcotic that can bring you down physically, mentally and emotionally.

The word “High” was originally used to denote something as elevated within society. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, terms such as high school, high class, and high road all indicate something elevated, advanced, or important. From an extraterrestrial perspective, the term “high noon” dates back to the early 14th century and refers to the alignment of the sun with the center of the sky above.

Space and Weed

Carl Sagan

One potential origin connection of space and weed can be traced back to legendary astronomer, planetary scientist, author, and generally smart dude, Carl Sagan. Sagan was an early advocate for cannabis consumption. In 1969, he published his essay Mr. X. In the essay, Sagan explains his first encounters with cannabis and its impact on his perception of art, music and social issues.

I am convinced that there are genuine and valid levels of perception available with cannabis (and probably with other drugs) which are, through the defects of our society and our educational system, unavailable to us without such drugs. Such a remark applies not only to self-awareness and to intellectual pursuits, but also to perceptions of real people, a vastly enhanced sensitivity to facial expression, intonations, and choice of words which sometimes yields a rapport so close it’s as if two people are reading each other’s minds.

Neil Degrasse Buzz-kill

However, not all celebrity space scientists agree. Neil Degrasse Tyson says smoking weed in space is probablynot a good thing. He attributes this to losing focus on the dangers of space while under the influence. Perhaps one might get so stoned that you inadvertently open the space lock instead of your lighter – that’s some strong weed for sure.

Space X Boss Elon Musk

Nevertheless, private space mogul Elon Musk is planning to launch some cannabis (and coffee) into outer space in2020. Musk is no stranger to cannabis, space or pushing the envelope. During an appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, he took a memorable space-weed journey of his own.
