Oh, to be a Trump supporter in this day-in-age. I can see it now: family members cutting you off, your social circle decreases, and occasionally, strangers calling you out.
I love it, and I want to see more of it.
They’ve become too comfortable with their racist, homophobic and misogynistic tendencies. Trump gave them a platform to feel safe and validated with their backward way of thinking, and I think it’s time to give them an overdue reality check.
I Can’t Stand Trump Supporters
They knowingly support a rotten man, who boasts rotten ideologies, and their excuse is, “He tells it like it is.”
On the other end of the Trump train, many of his supporters don’t even know what the fuck is going on. They don’t pay attention to politics, and they blindly vote for a man because of his political party and social media presence.
I can’t tell which is worse: blissful, negligent ignorance, or the deliberate act of willing oppression onto others.
Let’s be fair, Trump didn’t invent racism, homophobia or misogyny. He merely made the racists, homophobes and misogynists feel validated and secure. These ideologies have been a long, ugly battle that’s divided this country for centuries.
As the battle continues, we are expected to play nice and cut the Trumpeters some slack. We are expected to allow them to live peacefully amongst us. We are expected to turn a blind eye to aunt Karen’s demeaning comments during Thanksgiving. We are expected to keep the peace, but I think it’s time for this tradition of politeness to die.
Keep Telling Trump Supporters To Kick Rocks
It’s amazing to see how much this election has changed people’s perspectives on friendships, families and other relationships.
Before, you wouldn’t really discuss politics on certain occasions. Nowadays, people are disowning family members over Facebook.
Quite frankly, I don’t see this as a bad thing. I see this as setting healthy boundaries with others who live and preach misery. If that person just so happens to be grandpa who wiped your ass like once when you were two, so be it. You only owe respect and grace to family members, friends and others up to a certain point.
And it’s time to stop using the excuse of, “Oh, well, that’s just the time period and way of thinking that they grew up with.” An old dog can learn new tricks, too, and there’s no excuse for blatant hatred towards certain groups of people.
People Need To Care About Politics
If we stop entertaining the narrative that politics don’t matter, then people may think twice before supporting a fascist.
Some people only care enough about politics to vote for whoever is in their political party. They don’t care about the person’s character or morals, and they don’t care about the candidate’s past.
They only care about whether the person is a Democrat or a Republican, and that puts our democracy at risk for corruption and dirty politics.
So, if aunt Karen was being shamed at home for her unwavering support of the orange blob, maybe she would do some more research before voting republican.
Additionally, if people were being shamed into caring about politics, a candidate’s character and their past, maybe we wouldn’t be stuck with Biden and Harris.
Because let’s be real: anything is better than the Trump and Pence train, but why the hell did we got stuck with another circus show?
Not Everything Needs To End
In addition to cutting off family members, we need to make sure that we aren’t doing this with haste.
You don’t need to cut out family members who are ignorant but willing to change. After all, we want to spread inclusivity and positivity here. We want people to want to change, and that takes kindness and compassion.
However, if aunt Karen is banishing you to the depths of hell over your black boyfriend, it’s probably time to block that out of your life. Behaviors like this should not be tolerated, no matter the relationship.
The Bottom Line
The past four years have been extremely eye-opening. Americans showed the world just how little we’ve progressed over the past few centuries, and we should feel embarrassed.
However, if there is anything that we can control throughout all of this ugliness, it’s who we allow into our social circles. You don’t owe a toxic person a single ounce of your time, no matter their relationship to you.
Just remember: don’t be a dick about it. We want to build a better world together, and sadly, we can’t ship all of the Trumpeters to the moon.
