Court jails man 6 months for trafficking in Cannabis

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday sentenced a 28-year-old man, Lateef Agboola, to six months imprisonment  for trafficking in Cannabis.

Agboola, who was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), had pleaded guilty  before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke.

After his plea, the court reviewed the facts of the case with the prosecutor,  Mr Jeremiah Aernan, tendering his written statement, a request for scientific aid form, a drug analysis form and remnants of Cannabis,  among other items.

The court admitted and marked them as  exhibits.

The prosecutor consequently prayed the court to convict him.

The judge found Agboola guilty as charged and sentenced him.

Aneke held that the sentence should take effect from the date of Agboola’s arrest.

The judge, however, gave the convict an option of N200,000 fine.

According to the NDLEA, Agboola committed the offence on Sept. 17.

The agency  said that Agboola  was arrested on a tip-off at Ile-mere Ibese in Ikorodu, Lagos, while  unlawfully dealing on Cannabis weighing 250g.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Cannabis, along with  Cocaine, Heroin and others are prohibited by law.

Trafficking in Cannabis  contravenes the provisions of Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act of 2004. (NAN)
