Hip Hop’s Journey Through The Stars

Hip Hop is intergalactic. It’s a culture that has converged with every area of life. From its very beginnings, Hip Hop has embraced the idea that there is something beyond this ball of clay that spins like a Technics 1200. Hip Hop and space is a duo that has travelled a long way together.

From the jump, hip hop’s biggest hits were otherworldly. Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force was a trip into a world beyond earth, if not another dimension. The foundation of 90’s G-Funk rap in California was essentially built from Parliament-Funkadelic’s catalog which included the 1975 album Mothership Connection. Not to mention Dr. Funkenstein’s (aka Geroge Clinton) “Mothership” descending on stage during the band’s live performances in the 1970s.

With a rich history of hip hop and space connecting over the years, we want to take a look at some hip hop artists who have embraced the stars and the planetary system over the years. Who knows? Maybe after partaking in some Final Frontier concentrates, you’ll be convinced that maybe these artists are otherworldly.

B.o.B.

B.o.B., born Bobby Ray Simmons Jr., is a platinum rapper out of Decatur, Georgia. He’s had mainstream success with his B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray. He’s collaborated with some of hip hop’s greatest artists like Lil Wayne and T.I. Some would describe his sound as experimental and B.o.B. even dabbled in the rock genre.

While his music can be perceived as futuristic, progressive, and eclectic, perhaps the most intriguing aspect of B.o.B. is his staunch belief in the Flat Earth Theory.

In 2017, B.o.B. even tried to crowdsource funding in order to launch a satellite to prove the truth being preached by Flat Earthers. We are eagerly awaiting the results.

OutKast

After all, OutKast dropped ATLiens and while doing so coined a phrase that merged hip hop and space together for eternity. The legendary Atlanta team of Big Boi and André 3000 an out of this world five-album run from their 1993 debut through 2003.

On their second album, ATLiens, the track E.T. (Extraterrestrial) asks the listener “Are you alien?”. OutKast metaphorically used space and the universe throughout their discography. The group last dropped an album in 2006 and hasn’t performed together in years. Perhaps they spend most of their time on their home planets since retirement?

Kool Keith as Dr. Octagon

Earth people. New York to California. Earth people. I was born on Jupiter.

Hip Hop legend Kool Keith dropped perhaps his most well-known album under his alter-ego Dr. Octagon back in 1996. The single Earth People is all about aliens, space warfare, sci-fi technology, and references to galactic travel through fax machines.

The concept album focuses on the character of Dr. Octagon as he navigates the universe in search of whatever it is he wants to get into (it’s a loose concept). The album is a classic and includes production from Kutmaster Kurt and Dan the Automator.

Digable Planets

Digable Planets are a throwback on this list. Butterfly, Ladybug, and Doodlebug are well known for leaving their mark on Jazz Hip Hop. As their name indicates, their connection to the universe is strong.

Jazz music has a way of bending outside the norms of earthly sounds and creating sounds and combinations that mere humans might not know have existed. When Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat) dropped in 1992 it was lift-off mode for this Brooklyn crew.

The trio’s debut Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space) was a statement that they were not held captive to the time and space of this atmosphere.

Lil Wayne

We are not the same, I am an alien

Lil Wayne, Phone Home

Lil Wayne is an Alien. Anyone drinking that much lean, and still standing has to be.

With tracks like Phone Home and his 2013 appearance on Audio Push’s Space Jam it seems like Weezy is on another planet. Or maybe from one. His flow is otherworldly so perhaps when he claims to be from Mars, it’s something we should look into further.

What Have We Learned From These Space Rappers

After researching what rappers rap about space, I spent a little time thinking about why that is. It’s “unlikely” any of the rappers on this list have traveled beyond our solar system. So why so much reverence for space? There is probably a couple of reasons.

First, artistically speaking these artists all have something in common stylistically. They all pushed the norms and boundaries of hip hop to new heights. This is a rare quality in hip hop. Authenticity and originality is a risk. In most cases, this approach fails, which is why hip hop always has biters. However, when it does work it’s out of this world.

My second reason is more of an internal mindset of these artists. It’s well known that some of the artists on the list, like OutKast and Lil Wayne, grew up under difficult circumstances. In impoverished neighborhoods ravaged by the drug wars of the 1980s and 1990s, it is a miracle to make it out. Let alone make it to the top of the game. The journey against those odds can only be compared to something equally as rare or difficult to achieve: launching one into the stars, exploring the galaxy, and witnessing aliens.
