8 Must-see Films About Space to Watch with Weed

Many of you Loud News Net readers probably know by now that I love me some good weed and movies. I’ve reviewed and made lists for all types of movies, from comedies to horror films, but I realized recently that I’ve neglected one genre in particular: science fiction. I recently had the chance to try some of the cannabis brand Final Frontier’s Girl Scout Cookies which put me in the perfect mood to dive into a movie marathon. GSC was the perfect hybrid that had me melted in my couch but mentally elevated as if I was floating through a dense sea of stars and swirling hues. And I couldn’t help but be intrigued about thinking about space – the great unknown.

While we may never have come in contact with aliens (or at least that’s what THEY want us to believe…), the idea that life exists somewhere in the vast expanse of our known universe is so fascinating. Even more interesting is the subject of space altogether. It’s literally Earth’s backyard and yet, we know very little about it. Even Donald Trump recognizes the importance of conquering space (although it’s probably for all the wrong reasons).

But one thing is for certain – it’s size is inconceivable to us Earthly beings. The great unknown that is space and exploration of it has garnered some incredible movies over the years, about people traveling to far off planets, messing with black holes, life beyond ours, and the possible bending of time. I’ve gathered together 8 movies about space that are must-see for those that love to have their perception f’d with. So let’s spark one up and blast off into the great unknown!

2001: A Space Odyssey

Anyone familiar with sci-fi or, well, movies in general have probably heard of this film. Directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick (of The Shining and A Clockwork Orange fame) back in 1968, 2001 is still considered by many to be one of the greatest films of all time. It was very much ahead of it’s time in term of effects and direction, which blew audiences away and has somehow managed to still stand the test of time. But the narrative is what truly stands out, and the ending will leave you in a bit of a daze. If you must choose at least one film on this list to see, definitely make it this one.

Interstellar

Director Christopher Nolan is well on his way to being the next Kubrick, and this film along with Inception demonstrate that point. Released in 2014, Interstellar is a visual and thought provoking juggernaut of a sci-fi film that sends the narrative and it’s characters to the furthest depths of space and time. Although the merit of the ending is a bit debatable, the way the story sucks you in and takes you on a journey easily makes all forgiven. I highly recommend a good session and a watch with a friend because there’s so much to talk about after watching.

The Martian

Directed by Ridley Scott back in 2015, The Martian is about one man’s attempt to survive on Mars after being left behind on a space mission. It’s as beautiful as it is captivating, and makes the attempt to stick to the reality of our current understanding of what it would take to survive on Mars. The film won a Golden Globe for best picture and became Scott’s highest-grossing film which is fascinating since he’s the genius behind movies like Gladiator and another movie that made the list…

The ‘Alien’ Franchise

The original Alien film, also directed by Ridley Scott, premiered in 1979 and is still considered one of the greatest horror/sci-fi films of all time. It went on to spark an entire franchise of films, with Scott departing as director after the first but returning for the film Prometheus. While some are better than others, most of the core Alien films are definitely worth viewing, especially the later ones with Scott directing because the story elements become so much deeper. This isn’t your average monster movie, as the story dives deep into what life is and where it comes from, and the role of humans if we happen to find it on another planet and it wants to ravenously murder us.

Moon

The 2009 film Moon starring Sam Rockwell is something that you might have missed, but definitely shouldn’t have. With a modest budget and limited release, it may have managed to sneak past most peoples’ radars, but critics have given it well deserved high praise over the years. Rockwell plays a miner on a mission that takes him to the dark side of the moon, but in his solitude, he starts to lose it a bit. It’s indie sci-fi at its finest.

High Life

Another hidden indie gem from 2019, High Life stars Robert Pattinson as he, along with a band of criminals, are flung into the depths of a black hole per some weird science experiment. Like most films on this list, it’s visually striking but the story is what is most captivating. Director Claire Dennis even got a black hole expert to act as a consultant for the film’s story. And if Pattinson’s name wasn’t enough to catch your interest, Andre 3000 of Outkast also co-stars.

Solaris

If you look up “cerebral mind fuckery” in the dictionary, chances are this film would be the definition. Solaris, released in 2002, paints the tale of a psychologist who is sent to a space station that has some seriously trippy stuff going on with the crew. With a stellar cast and an original story that definitely plays tricks on your mind, this is a film experience you won’t forget.

Life

This 2017 film wasn’t a big hit with critics but if you love some dark sci-fi monster horror, you will definitely dig this one. Life centers around a group of researchers aboard a space station that find the first sign of life on Mars. Now I know that doesn’t sound too original and the plot is nothing to write home about, but along with the star studded cast and ruthlessly gruesome horror scenes, it’s definitely worth a watch.
