We never thought the day would come, but Jamaica is running low on ganja. Due to heavy rains followed by an extended drought that’s coupled with an increase in local consumption and a drop in the number of cannabis farmers, the shortage in the island’s famed market is significant.

The most recent hurricane season caused tens of thousands of dollars in losses, according to farmers who cultivate cannabis outside the legal system of Jamaica. According to Daneyel Bozra, who grows marijuana in the southwest part of Jamaica, in a historical village called Accompong – it destroyed everything.

They  spent more than $18 billion on cannabis in 2020 – which is a whopping 70% as compared to  last year.

nationwide sales of medical and adult-use marijuana increased by 71% over 2019.
Americans purchased $18.3 billion in cannabis products over the past calendar
year, $7.6 billion more than the $10.7 billion in sales the previous year.

With medical marijuana now legal in 37 states, including Washington, DC, have legalized cannabis for all adults. These profits are only expected to rise with the way things are going in the world. With only so many states in the US left that still need to legalize cannabis, Virginia is right on track with its adult-use legalization bill that is moving through the Legislature this week.

With the Senate Judiciary Committee voting to advance the legislation, the task is backed up and sponsored by Sen. Adam Ebbin Gov. Ralph Northam. Soon, they will legalize the production, sale and use of cannabis for adults 21 and older.

Meanwhile, in Cape Town, South Africa, Cape Town – a leading law firm in South Africa is applying to the high court to set a further precedent on the legality of private cultivation, possession and consumption of cannabis, as provided for by the 2018 Constitutional Court judgment. The guys from Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr (CDH) said the firm will be representing its clients, The Haze Club (THC).

CDH has now approached the Western Cape High Court for an order that will allow THC’s cannabis-growing model and regard it as completely legal. This arrangement is in line with the 2018 Constitutional Court judgment and does not transgress any laws, hence the argument of pro-grow clubs.

THC specifically uses a model internationally known as the ’’grow club model’, allowing an entity to lease a space and dedicated it to becoming a grow area for cannabis – and to grow on behalf of others. With these grow clubs popping up like mushrooms in South Africa at the moment, we can only wait to see how government will react in the light of this appeal.
