Why Should I Use CBD Cream?

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally-occurring compound found in the hemp plant. Unlike THC (which is more commonly associated with marijuana), CBD does not make you feel high. CBD is also legal under federal law, provided that it contains no more than 0.3% THC.

CBD is associated with a number of health and wellness benefits when ingested. When applied topically, it may also improve your well-being.

Specifically, studies have shown that applying CBD onto your skin can help to reduce arthritis-related pain and swelling. In 2020, a separate study determined that topical CBD reduces pain from nerve damage, Yet another study linked topical CBD to reduced jaw pain for people with specific disorders related to their jaws. CBD has also been shown to be beneficial in assisting with acne, psoriasis and eczema

This research isn’t surprising given that, when taken orally, CBD is known to alleviate pain and inflammation. It makes sense, then, that the same compound would produce similar benefits when applied directly onto the skin – where it can be absorbed into the affected area. For example, a person with ankle pain may apply a CBD cream to reduce pain and swelling on that ankle.

Of course, as with any supplement, it is important to talk to your doctor before using CBD cream. While CBD is generally considered safe and effective, with few side effects, it is possible that it may interact with certain prescription medicines. Your healthcare provider can advise you on using CBD cream, the right serving size, and whether it may interact with any of your medications.

DIY CBD Cream: A Basic Recipe

Given its healing properties, keeping a CBD-infused lotion, salve or balm on hand is a great way to handle acute or chronic pain. You can purchase already-made CBD creams – or even make your own. To do so, you will just need a few basic ingredients:

  • CBD oil or tincture
  • Shea or cocoa butter
  • Coconut oil
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Essential oil of your choice

The first, and most important, ingredient is CBD oil. Green Wellness Life actually sells raw CBD oil extracts that you can use to make your cream. When making this recipe, you’ll want to choose the highest quality CBD oil that you can find. Remember: when you apply this cream onto your skin, it will be absorbed. You don’t want to use any ingredient that contains toxins or contaminants that could get into your system.

Shopping for CBD oil can be confusing, with tons of weird acronyms and terms. There are three basic types of CBD oil that you can buy: full spectrum, broad spectrum, and CBD isolate.

Full and broad spectrum contain all of the beneficial compounds found in the hemp plant, which can produce what is known as the entourage effect. Full spectrum CBD contains a trace amount (no more than 0.3%) of THC, while broad spectrum CBD is THC-free. By contrast, CBD isolate only contains CBD, with no other compounds.

Once you have decided what type of CBD oil you want to buy, you should then check for two things: (1) where the hemp used to make it was grown; and (2) if it has been independently tested.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate CBD products at this time. For this reason, you should only buy products that have been independently tested, with the lab results available for you to review. In this way, you will know that you are only getting what you want – and not getting anything that you don’t want.

All of our raw oil extracts at Green Wellness Life are independently lab tested for safety and made here in America. We do all the vetting for you, so that you don’t have to.

Now that you have your CBD oil, it is time to get to work. In addition to the ingredients listed above, you will need a double boiler, measuring cups and spoons, a mixer or blender, a spoon, a spatula, and a glass container to store the cream.

Start by measuring out each of your ingredients. You will need:

  • 2 teaspoons (tsp) of CBD oil or tincture
  • ½ cup of shea or cocoa butter
  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • ⅓ cup of aloe vera gel

Next, fill the bottom of a double boiler with an inch or so of water, and heat the water over low to medium heat. If you don’t have a double boiler, don’t worry – just nestle a metal mixing bowl on top of the pot.

Place the shea or cocoa butter and the coconut oil in the bowl or the top of the double boiler, and gently melt it, stirring frequently. Continue cooking and stirring until the butter and oil are completely melted and combined, with no lumps. Then remove the oils from the heat, and transfer them to a blender or mixing bowl.

Allow the oil mixture to cool for a minimum of one hour. If you need to, stir the oils and scrape down the sides of the bowl to allow them to cool further.

Once the oils are cool, add the aloe vera gel, CBD oil, and a few drops of essential oil. Remember that you can always add more essential oil if the scent isn’t to your liking – but you can’t take it out if you add too much.

At this stage, you may also add two tablespoons of vegetable glycerin – a clear liquid made from soybean, palm, or coconut oil. If you can find it, vegetable glycerin can prevent the finished cream from hardening by adding moisture. You may also choose to add some vitamin E oil, which can extend the shelf life of the cream.

Finally, beat or blend all of the ingredients together until they have reached a whipped consistency. You can then transfer the finished product to your glass container. It will keep for 2 weeks without refrigeration; if you make more than you can use in that time period, you may want to store it in the refrigerator to preserve it.

If your CBD cream isn’t exactly how you want it, you may need to troubleshoot the recipe a bit. For example, if the cream is gritty, whip it for longer in the blender or mixer while adding more vegetable glycerin one tablespoon at a time. If it is too thick, add in some aloe vera gel while whipping the cream. If it is too thin, melt some more shea/cocoa butter and coconut oil, let it cool, and then blend it into the cream one tablespoon at a time until you have reached the desired consistency.

Finally, you can adjust the potency of the cream by adding more – or less – CBD oil.  Just be sure to blend the cream well each time that you add another ingredient.
