After five years of efforts, Connecticut lawmakers have reached a wide-ranging compromise on legalizing recreational marijuana that Gov. Ned Lamont will sign if passed by the legislature.
Final approval, however, remains uncertain because the measure requires votes by the state House of Representatives and Senate as they face adjournment of the legislative session at midnight Wednesday.
Some lawmakers are still on the fence on a controversial issue, and opponents might stage a long filibuster in an effort to defeat the bill as time expires Wednesday.
House Speaker Matt Ritter of Hartford urged caution about pushing the issue off to a special session in the summer because some legislators will be out of town.
“Attendance can be spotty at those times. That can be good or bad, depending who is not there,” Ritter told reporters Saturday. “I think we can get it done. From my viewpoint, we’re in that ballpark where it can happen. So I think, throw it on the board [for a vote] and see what happens.”
House Majority Leader Jason Rojas of East Hartford, the chief legislative coordinator on the issue, has been making changes in the 300-page bill to accommodate objections and viewpoints of the Lamont administration and Democratic lawmakers. Multiple attorneys have been drafting various components of the comprehensive bill behind closed doors in order to make sure that it is ready for a vote in the final days.
