Evidence enrolls the help of Alchemist, Boldy James, and Conway the Machine on one of the best albums of 2021. As listeners, we’re treated to a sonic kaleidoscope of beats used to showcase Evidence’s growth as an emcee.
EV has been putting it down since the days of Dilated Peoples and underground hip hop dominance. “Unlearning” is just the next step in his evolution.
Evidence moves away from the traditional 4/4 boom-bap and targeted delivery on the album. He exchanges it for more emotional, unpredictable, and personal lyrics. The change is rewarding for fans that have been following Michael Paretta’s growth as an artist over the past 25 years.
My biased opinion is that this is a hip-hop masterpiece. Perhaps it’s hyperbolic, but I think artists who take chances, show vulnerabilities, and grow are way more entertaining than artists who repeatedly hit us over the head with bravado.
